What It’s Like to Live in a Wheelchair

Nearly 65 million around the world are unable to walk and require wheelchairs to move around. From various aging aspects to different types of disabilities, there are many reasons why some people may need a wheelchair.

Feelings of Helplessness

Research shows that it’s common for people who are dependent on wheelchairs to feel helpless due to their condition. Although remote control wheelchairs available in the market do provide some form of autonomy and independence, it’s still not the same as walking.

Being confined to a wheelchair can often result in feelings of worthlessness and lead to depression, anxiety and many other mental health issues. However, it’s possible to avoid these things with the help, love and support of loved ones.

Difficultly Getting Through Tight Space

Unfortunately, not all spaces are wheelchair accessible. Such situations can be challenging and frustrating for a wheelchair user.

The good news is that there’s rising accessibility awareness for wheelchair users and construction companies and contractors are creating spaces, keeping in mind the needs of differently-abled individuals. In the coming years, we can expect most public places to have ramps and other facilities to accommodate these individuals.

Unfortunately, most places don’t have a ramp  for differently abled individuals and construction companies don’t take these problems into account at the time of construction.

Hiring an ADA approved contractor can address these challenges as the contractors can help make buildings and facilities more accessible at the time of construction.

Social Life

Individuals in wheelchairs may not get the opportunity to socialize with others unless someone accompanies them outside. However, things are changing as the government is taking measures to increase accessibility for people with special needs. From creating separate parking areas to ramps, authorities are trying to make it easier for such people to get out of their homes and socialize.
